| .. WaterdeepMUD is named after the city of Waterdeep
on the continent of Faerun and on the planet Toril. These fictional
places are a part of the table top roleplaying game Dungeons and Dragons,
and the world campaign setting known as the Forgotten Realms (which
includes an extensive library of novels). WaterdeepMUD was originally
based on the Forgotten Realms but over the years took on the traits
and themes of Final Fantasy (6 & 7) creating this semi-unique combinition.
The name was also used to attrach D&D players and Forgotten Realms Novel
readers. Despite being called Waterdeep, the actual City of Waterdeep
has only existed at rare moments in the 9 years of operation, shutting
down for reconstruction for years on end. The general population of
players on the mud spend their time on the continent dubbed 'The Great
Realms' in which places like Westbridge, New Thalos, Drow City, Torregiano,
Vector City and Stonebow Dale exist. It should be noted this continent
is created from both 'stock' and 'non-stock' zones. Stock Zones are
a set of basic zones all muds share at one point, and why you can find
these zones on other muds. The continent of Faerun is built of non-stock
zones created only for WaterdeepMUD. |

The Planet Toril

(Full

| .. The above imagine is a map of Toril, taken from the TSR
released Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas. The continent of
the Great Realms is located in the southeastern part of the
world map. On offical maps this continent appears as Terra Incognito
(blank), but our version of the continent has been merged with
the above image. The city of Waterdeep and the existing parts
of Faerun found on the mud can be found in the region that says
'Faerun' in red, near the top left center. Waterdeep is located
on the coast on the purple border line seen on the map. |

Continent of Cruoris (Great Realms)
(Full
Scale)
| .. The Great Realms is based on Final Fantasy 6 and 7 sharing
random themes, names and ideas. Unlike Final Fantasy 7 though
the continent of the Great Realms is not that advanced with
technology (electricity). Technology resembles the themes of
Final Fantasy 6 which is steam-era technology. The Makou Reactors
from Final Fantasy 7 do not produce electricity in the Great
Realms, they produce a burnable gas (such as natural gas) which
is used to fuel these steam powered inventions. The existing
part of WaterdeepMUD appears on the middle east-coast of the
continent where a thin range of mountains stretches out to the
Sea of Swords. These are the mountains that divide Westbridge
from Torregiano and Vector, and house such places as the Dwarven
Kingdom, Polaris and Makou City. The airship-only zone called
Heifong is located in the center of the continent. For some
more details on the Great Realms please check out (this) article.
The Interactive Atlas is a flash movie which will show you all
of the major towns and their names, and the major empires of
the continent. This project is still under construction and
will have more information at a later date, such as clicking
on the towns and getting detailed information. |
(Full

| .. This is a map created by hand using colors and icons from
the Forgotten Realms Interactive Atlas and is dubbed 'The Wall
Map' due to its size (3.03mb). This map represents the existing
mud from Stonebow Dale in the south to Vector in the north.
Many icons found for the major zones of the map are taken from
an old map created by an artist (symbols for Westbridge, New
Thalos, Stonebow etc). Design and landmark positions on this
map were taken from map surveys such as the map below. |

Mud Survey Maps

(Full
Scale)
| .. Like most the survery maps, they are created by pasting
screenshots of the in-game map command together. The above map
created in early 2008 represents a good portion of the mud known
as the 'landmass' zone. These are the areas that make up the
main structure of the game, but doesn't include all zones, such
as dungeons and certain towns. The continent of Cruoris (Great
Realms) is located on the left side of the map, and is made
up of both stock and non-stock zones. Most main zones appear
with the exception of Torregiano, which due to its size is kept
on its own map level. Heifong City which is not a part of the
main landmass is located in the red box. The right side of the
map is the continent of Faerun, and displays most of the zones
available. This continent is made from nothing but non-stock
zones, and most zones are planned accordingly to official maps
of the Forgotten Realms. |
(Full
Scale)
| .. The map above was created several years ago with Zmud Automapper.
Flaws in old area designs cause rooms to overlap dubbed 'non-linear'.
Waterdeep has worked for years to correct this problem, making
our map command more efficent with less errors. This map was
created as a survey to see exactly how the two continents compared
in size, along with actual position of zones. If you can zoom
in on the image you will see the lines are actually squares,
which represent rooms. The lines that appear on this map are
made from the major roads that connect the major cities. The
following maps are taken from screen pictures of the MAP command
on WaterdeepMUD. These maps were created by cut and copying
sections together to create large maps. Such maps are created
for projects such as fixing the non-linear problems of the mud
while creating a graphical landscape. |
(Full
Scale)
| .. This map shows Vector City at the top and the grasslands
south of it, along with the Istar Sea. Torregiano is marked
on the map but due to its actualy size does not appear on this
map. The Elven Valley which was renovated can been seen in the
southwest corner. |
(Full
Scale)
| .. This map is a survey of Torregiano, one of the largest
zones on WaterdeepMUD (in both kilobyte and room number). The
main city and its four distinct blocks can be seen in the bottom
left region. Accomaxx Island which has yet to open to the public
can be seen in the north with its island border. There is a
second layer to the city of Torregiano that houses the Sea Port
outside, and underneath the city itself is the Airship Port
and hangers. This zone only covers the northwest part of the
city, as the Tripower Tower stands in the dead center. As you
can see the underground layer is much bigger than its above
counterpart. |

The Calendar of Harptos
The people of Toril follow the calender system known
as Harptos, named for the wizard who invented it. It is typically
not called by the Harptos name due to the fact it is the only major
calendar on the planet. The Continent of the Great Realms does not
follow the traditional Harptos Calendar which is made up of twelve
months, each month is made up of 30 days and only 3 weeks (made up
of 10 days). The Great Realms follows a system of twelve months with
each month made up of 30 to 31 days, 4 weeks made up of 7 days each.
Below shows you the Harptos Calendar Months and Holidays compared
to Earthly Months. The calendar setup of the Great Realms is typically
refered to as the Great Realmism Calendar.

For roleplaying purposes we recommend using 'Real Time' to figure
out an exact date. Meaning if today is Febuary 22, then it is the
22nd day of Alturiak. But of course this is only a general idea
and depends on the use of the calendar for context. The exact year
varies between the Great Realmism Calendar and the Harptos Calendar.
Currently the Great Realms calendar year is roughly almost a century
behind the Faerun calendar year. Below is a chart showing the years
of the Great Realms, Faerun and Earth. Each year is also given a
name. Please note that the names below are listed from the Great
Realmism Calendar, as each year has its own unique name, the Faerun
Calendar Year Names would differ.

The planet of Toril has one moon which is named Selune,
after the goddess Selune who represents the mysterious power of
the moon, the celestial force that influences the tides, changes,
lycanthropes, orders reproductive cycles, and pulls at the edge
of sanity. The phases of the moon fall generally the same each month,
starting at the Full Moon on the 1st. Each phase roughly lasts 5
days each.
