"Mud For Dummies"

A Multi-User-Dungeon (MUD) is an online multiplayer internet game and could be concidered the father of all online gaming. Muds are text-based games, meaning there are no graphics which can be a turn off to many people. It is a strange and unique world when you first login, but give it a little time and everything will 'click'. Even in this modern era of MMORPGs such as Worlds of Warcraft, these ancient text base games originally created in the mid-1970s still have a large following of dedicated players, with over a thousand registered games on many 'mud advertisement' sites. The following document will explain how to log onto the mud. Once logged in, there is an online tutorial that will teach you the basics of the mud, such as talking and walking. There are also ways of getting help, such as talking to a [MA] or Mortal Administrator, a mortal who has volunteered to help players, or the Immortal Staff or Game Administrators. |

You need to download a program called a 'Mud Client'. This will allow you to login to any mud through the login address. A mud login is a domain name with a port number you connect to, such as WaterdeepMUD which is located at WDMUD.COM Port 6660. For this document we provide a link to GMUD which is a simple to use but now old mud client. There are other and more popular clients such as ZMUD and CMUD, which can be found via google. Download GMUD and open it (this copy of Gmud is already setup with WaterdeepMUD and Time of Darkness MUD in its global addresses). Step 1: Download and Unzip GMUD and, open GMUD.EXE and the program will load into the main window.
Step 2: On the top menu click [FILE] and then [CONNECT].
Step 3: Select the mud you wish to connect to. This tutorial is for Waterdeep 'City Of Splendors' aka WaterdeepMUD.
Step 4: The picture above shows you what will appear when you connect to the mud. This is known as the greeting screen, and it is where you enter your character's name and password. Of course if you are reading this, you are a new player and will need to create a player. Pick a name and type it in, if for some reason the game askes you for your Password, this means the name is already being used by someone. Click [FILE] and [DISCONNECT] and then reconnect, and try a new name.
Step 5: When you find an available name, it will ask if the name is correct. Type yes, and you will be asked to enter a 8 character password. We recommend you type in something that no person can guess. Do not use dictionary words, birthdays or addresses. A combination of letters and numbers is usually best, even if its a word and number. The mud then will ask you to retype the password, and then enter the character creation (such as seen above). Step 6: First you must pick your race. Each race has pros and cons within the game, and information can be found on this website under 'Races' in the Game Articles Section. Choose your race and it will ask what sex you wish to be, Male, Female or Neutral. Choose one and then you will be prompted to pick a class. Step 7: Classes have different abilities, such as a mage can use magic, while a gladiator cannot. Information about classes can be found on this website under the 'Classes' in the Game Articles Section. After selecting your class, you will be asked to choose an alignment.
Step 8: After picking your alignment, you will be asked if you wish to customize your character. This option allows you to add skills and spells which are not given by default to your race/class. You can gain these skills later on in the game using Training Points and Practise Points. These points are gained each time you level, and can also be used to raise your stats, hitpoints and mana. For the purpose of this tutorial, type NO. The mud then will ask for you to choose a weapon, and by default you will only have one option. Type the name of that weapon in.
Step 9: The text above resembles what you will witness now as your character logs into the mud. The first thing that appears after picking a weapon is the MOTD, which is a second greeting window which reminds you to read the rules and so forth. You will then be greeted with 'Welcome to Waterdeep 'City of Splendors' Please obey the rules, "help rules". You are now logged into the mud. The mud itself is made up of 'Rooms', which you will move to and from using directional commands (North, South, East, West, Up and Down). To enter these commands, simply type in the word and hit enter. There is also an 'online' tutorial which you can take to further your mud education, type DOWN (hit enter) and NORTH (hit enter). Read the text that appears, which will explain the basics of the mud. |
