// community — builders & players

A guild of keepers, not a company of vendors.

For twenty-eight years the lanterns of Waterdeep have been lit by hand — by a named circle of volunteer archwizards, area builders, coders, lore-keepers, and immortal NPCs who answer the help channel at three in the morning. There is no parent company behind these walls, no quarterly roadmap, no layoffs on a Tuesday. Only a guild of one hundred and forty living contributors, and the thousands of players who have walked the same corridors since before the web had a search box.

// the guild

Those who keep the lanterns lit.

A working roster of the named circles that hold the world together on any given evening. Titles are voluntary; the work is not. If you linger long enough on the help channel, you will meet at least three of them.

  • archwizard

    Archwizard Ember — Founder & Engine Custodian

    holding the seat since March 1996 · wrote the LPC-derived runtime that still drives every room

    Architected the original codebase in 1996 and still personally reviews every engine commit. Ember answers to the title "Archwizard" the way a cathedral answers to its cornerstone.

  • area_builders

    The Cartographers' Circle — 38 zones, 4.2M rooms

    52 active builders · last new zone committed: The Salt-Marsh Reliquary, October 2024

    Hand-authoring the connected plane network since the late nineties. Every door, NPC, and quest hook you encounter passed through at least two of their hands before it reached the live world.

  • lore_keepers

    The Quiet Council — chroniclers & quest reviewers

    31 active keepers · 1,200+ quests authored, reviewed, and shelved in the player-built canon

    They edit the wiki that never quite gets finished, shepherd new quest lines through review, and remember the name of every NPC you've helped slay since 2004.

  • help_volunteers

    The Night Watch — help channel, every timezone

    47 active volunteers · average first-response under 4 minutes on weekend evenings

    The first voice a new player hears on the newbie channel, and the last one to sign off on a slow Tuesday. They do not get paid; they get stories.

// honors & recognition

A parchment honor roll, not a logo strip.

The wider communities of MUD-craft and interactive fiction have, on occasion, written our name down. We keep these citations framed in the council hall because they were earned by players and builders — never bought, never sponsored.

    Living World Award

    Awarded by the MUD Coders Guild for an unbroken record of player-driven world evolution — quests, factions, and NPC arcs that have been rewritten in response to player choice for over a decade.

  • 2020 — 2024

    #1 "Best Classic MUD Still Active"

    Five consecutive years at the top of the MUD Coders Guild community survey — voted on by players and builder peers across the genre, not by editorial staff.

    Free-to-Play, Sustained by Donations

    Recognized in the MUD press as a model of community-funded longevity — zero pay-to-win mechanics, zero subscription gates, twenty-one years on the same volunteer economics.

Chapter II · The Two Doors

Joining the Guild

The world of Waterdeep is not run by a corporation. It is held up, room by room, by a circle of volunteers — builders who write the alleys and the inns, coders who keep the engine humming, guides who greet every newcomer in the tavern square. There are two doors into that circle, and the one you choose first is yours to decide.

The Path of Play

Walk in as a traveler. Pick a name, pick a race, step off the transport from Waterdeep harbour, and let the city teach you its streets. Your character is saved between sessions — the sword you lose on the third night is still missing when you log in next month, and the innkeeper who learned your face will nod at you three years from now. Play requires no application, no interview, and no fee. A keyboard, a browser, and a few honest evenings are enough.

  • costfree, since launch
  • timeevenings, weekends, lunch breaks

The Path of Building

Linger long enough as a player and you will notice a door in the back of the tavern — the one staff use to disappear into the workshop behind the walls. The Path of Building is open to any player who has walked the world for at least sixty days and wishes to learn the craft of writing rooms, NPCs, and quests. You will be mentored by a senior builder, your early work is reviewed before it goes live, and there is no deadline. Some builders add a single corridor a year. Others have authored whole districts. Both are welcome here.

Either path begins the same way — you arrive, you speak, the city remembers.
